Plans are taking shape now for the TICA National Conference and Tennis Ireland Forum, scheduled for November 29th and 30th at Dublin City University. The theme of this years Conference is `MAKING TENNIS FUN`. We believe that fun and enjoyment are vital for players AT ALL LEVELS if they are to stay in the game. Personally, I always remember an interview with Bjorn Borg which I read many years ago, shortly after he retired in his mid twenties. When asked why he had given up the game at such a young age, his simple reply was “It was not fun any more”…
This year, by choice, there will be no `main presenter` from abroad. Instead we would like to tap into the experience and expertise of Irish coaches, who have a true and practical understanding of what is happening in Irish tennis, and, even more importantly, what needs to happen in order to keep growing the game while retaining current players. TICA also considers this move as being a vote of confidence in its members and in Irish coaches in general. I will keep you up to date with further details as they become available, but if the last weekend of November is not already marked in your diary – now is the time to do it. I am confident that Conference 2008 will be our best ever!
There is one final point I would like to make about the Conference. If you are a contracted Club Coach, Head Coach or similar at a tennis club, I firmly believe that the Club should be paying your attendance fees and expenses at this and any other educational events you attend during the year. After all, it is the members who ultimately benefit from the ideas you pick up at workshops, seminars and conferences. In almost any sphere of business you care to think about, if the company was sending you to a conference, in order ultimately to benefit the company through your increased knowledge – would you really be expected to pay for yourself? I don`t think so… I recommend a chat wth the Club Secretary!
All the best,
