Congratulations to Munster man CONOR O’CALLAGHAN who was recently named as the Tennis Ireland Coach of The Year for 2012 at a ceremony in Naas LTC. Conor is one of Ireland’s most highly regarded coaches. He is currently helping to transform Munster tennis following his appointment a number of years ago as Development Officer for the province. He is also developing quite a reputation as a `coach of coaches`, judging by comments from candidates on the current Tennis Ireland Level One course, on which Conor is assisting with the tutoring process. Furthermore, it couldn’t happen to a nicer or more helpful guy! I am sure I speak for all the coaches when I say “well done and congrats” to Conor. You can see Conor receiving his award from Tennis Ireland President Ann O’Connor  at

Congratulations must also go to LESLEY O’HALLORAN and the rest of the Irish Women’s 45 Team, for winning Ireland’s first ever ITF Seniors World Team Championship title in San Diego recently. The team came through to win the Margaret Court Cup, over number two seeds France. Lesley played a key role for the team, winning both her singles and doubles rubbers (with Philippa Palmer) in the final. You can see video of the crucial moments at

But Lesley was not the only member and coach to play in the Championships. Also representing Ireland at the World Team Championships was our own Chairman LIAM CASSIDY, as well as members GILLIAN CHANDLER, DICK McCARTHY, LIAM O’BRIEN and TOMMY ROCHFORD.

Tennis Holidays Ltd is offering €100 per booked client to coaches who successfully promote the holidays in their club. The man behind Tennis Holidays is TICA member (and coach at Lansdowne LTC) Kris Koik, who writes, “Tennis Holiday in Estonia is held in coastal resort town of Haapsalu and players are accommodated in spa hotel that is situated right on a beach. Normal day plan is that lessons are 11-1 followed by lunch and spa treatments. After that players can relax and enjoy the beach or activities in the town. In the evenings we organize nights out on the town and it is always great fun! The weeks available are 30 June – 7 July and 7-14 July. All levels of players are accommodated”.

Please contact Kris for further information on 087 784 7263 or You can see all the details

TICA will shortly change its name to TENNIS COACH IRELAND. In the past some coaches have inquired about using the Association’s name and/or logo on their business card, headed paper, website etc. We exist to service the needs of our membership, so if use of the name and logo will assist a coach in the further development and promotion of their business, it is something that the Association will look favourably upon whenever possible.

However, despite exhaustive research, it has proven impossible to develop a cast-iron set of criteria by which a member can be guided in the use of the name/logo – there are simply too many ifs, ands, and buts….

The committee has therefore decided to deal with this issue on a case-by-case basis. Which means that if you wish to use the (upcoming!) TCI name or logo, you need to contact Peter Farrell in the first instance detailing the exact usage you intend. Peter will then consult with the committee and respond to your request. We hope this helps in clarifying the issue for all members.
