GETTING THE MOST FROM www.tennisplayer.net
Many thanks to one of our long-time members Robert Cherry, who has written and kindly allowed us to publish a very interesting article. In the introduction to the piece, Robert writes: “In this tutorial I will show you how to simply analyze videos of professional players from the tennisplayer.net website and print out screenshots after analysis. You can use these screenshots for your lessons to help students improve areas such as…’ To read the full article, please go to www.tenniscoachireland.ie, log in, and you will see the article in the `Latest News’ section.
NEW WEBSITE at www.sportenglandclubleaders.com
I think this site will be of interest for any coach who is involved in running their tennis club, as a committee member, Head Coach or Director of Tennis.
“Club Leaders is part of the Olympic Legacy programme, ‘Places People Play’, and provides free training and support to those doing the day-to-day running of community sport, helping create a robust, economically sustainable and enterprising club network. Club Leaders is being delivered by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) who are working with Sport England to help improve business skills in sports clubs by bringing their knowledge and experience to the programme. There are training modules that you can access online. It’s open to anyone in a sports club who wants better business skills.
“This is a fantastically simple site where clubs can access all manner of practical club management information and advice in a one-stop shop”.
USEFUL VIDEOS FROM THE USTA
1. Technique for Tennis 10s: The videos are broken down by three formats, strokes and competency. The three formats are: 36 foot court with red balls; 60 foot court with orange balls; and 78 foot (full size) court with the green ball. The strokes are: forehand and backhand volleys, overhead, serve and return. The competencies are: techniques, footwork, play and advanced play.
2. Recreational On-Court Training: “Increase your knowledge by engaging with these informative videos that showcase activities to get kids having fun and playing tennis right away. The videos showcase the USTA 10 and Under Tennis Format Practice Plans for ages 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10. These practice plans contain eight progressive practice sessions for each age category. Other video selections include the 10 and Under Tennis play format in action and tips on coaching youth”.
Irish-based coach Kris Koik and our own Chairman Liam Cassidy have developed a unique app that can help you make money, coaching from the comfort of your sitting room! Sounds like a tall order? Well, check out the Instacoach app from the Apple App Store at https://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/instacoach/id520764144?mt=8
CALLING ALL LEVEL 1 COACHES
Would you like to become a Level 2 coach? Tennis Ireland wants to run a Level 2 course, starting next August. But they will only do so if sufficient Level 1 coaches sign up, so that running the course is economically viable. If you think you might be interested, please write to Marie Moran at the Tennis Ireland office (email@example.com) and let her know. By registering at this stage you are not committing yourself to doing the course, but you do increase the likelihood of the course going ahead.
Tennis Coach Ireland will credit 33 CPD points under the 2012 Programme to any member who attends one of the following courses (please remember to send me your certificate/letter of attendance):
“Waterford Sports Partnership, in conjunction with Coaching Ireland is hosting three pilot Coaching Seminars in October and November. All the Seminars will include a mixture of practical and theory elements. The aim of the Seminars is to develop the skills of individual coaches in the areas of planning, observation, communication and feedback. The Seminars will be of benefit to coaches across all sports and the speakers we have lined up bring great expertise in their respective fields The cost of the seminar is €10 per person. Booking is essential as places are limited. There is a Special Group Rate of €25 per Seminar for 3 coaches from the same club”.

Mike Lloyd of CoolThreads, who supplies our TCI clothing range, was a very busy man at the Conference. Members who ordered clothing on the day will have received it by now, or it will be on its way to you. Having had an opportunity to see the range, if you wish to order any items, please go to www.coolthreads.ie or use the form that was in your delegate conference pack.
PRIZE DRAW– with thanks to www.humankinetics.com
Human Kinetics is my favourite publisher of tennis books – they are constantly coming up with new and definitive titles. Speaking personally I have learned a lot from reading their books down the years. HK have kindly provided us with copies of two of their recent titles for a draw among TCI members. The two titles are
1. TENNIS ANATOMY – http://www.humankinetics.com//products/all-products/Tennis-Anatomy.
2. TENNIS SKILLS AND DRILLS – http://www.humankinetics.com//products/all-products/Tennis-Skills–Drills
To enter the draw, just text the words ‘Human Kinetics’ followed by your name to me at 086 822 8235. All responses received by Monday 29th October will go into a hat, and the first two picked out will receive one of the above books (results in next newsletter).
